The surest type of object detection in the area of photoelectric sensors is the physical interruption of the closed beam of light from a light barrier by an object. In SmartReflect sensors from Baumer, the closed beam of light is formed between the sensor and a part of the machine, for example. Separate reflectors or receivers are unnecessary. The only prerequisite is that a defined background, which can serve as a reference point, be present within the sensing distance of the sensor. Color and material of background and objects are irrelevant for the detection.

For different applications with different space requirements the user can select from various sensor configurations. The portfolio ranges from subminiature sensors for automated handling to sensors in hygienic design for the food and beverage industry. These are optimized to stainless steel as the reference and achieve a long range of 800 mm.
