Condition Monitoring

Multifunctional sensors have been part of Baumer's standard portfolio for years. The proven BPIK axle encoder has now been extended with condition monitoring functionality. Multiple use of the sensors enables economical and extremely efficient condition monitoring on the wheelset, e.g. to detect flat spots.

Technology

Multi-unit encoder concept

The major motivation behind the development of the unique multi-unit encoder concept by Baumer was to saving installation cost. Up to 4 encoder units can be integrated into a single sensor. Each encoder unit is independent and can be freely and individually configured, e.g. interface, pulses per revolution (ppr), etc. This cuts down on the number of connectors and cables connecting axis to train body and thus minimizes the risk of damage caused by external impacts.

Detection of torsional vibration

The BPIK and BPIV speed signals enable for precise detection of high-dynamic torsional vibrations thanks to unrivalled signal quality, robustness, high resolution and zero backlash. This reduces wear and tear while improving traction, passenger safety and comfort.
