Bigger container vessels in shorter docking times: still the pressure on crane and hoist equipment is to work 24/7. For more than 60 years Baumer Hübner has been transforming experience in harsh port environments into unmatched robust and durable sensor solutions. Today we offer cutting-edge technology that increases uptime in cranes, hoists, winches and other port equipment whilst boosting IOT developments with intelligent, programmable components.
Port overview
Import containers will be moved from quayside to landside, export containers from landside to quayside and transshipment containers from quayside to the stacks for intermediate storage and back to the quayside. As for the import direction, a vessel arrives with the containers at the allocated berthing place and quay cranes are assigned for discharging.
A quay crane (STS) picks up a container by use of a spreader from the vessel, lifts it up with a hoist and moves the container to the landside using the trolley.
Depending on the terminal’s equipment the crane either puts the container on an automated guided vehicle (AGV) or truck, or it leaves the container at a buffer area underneath the crane where the container can be picked up by straddle carriers (SC) or automated lifting vehicles (ALV).
A hoist is designed to pull a heavy load horizontally over a flat or slightly inclined surface. A winch pulls the load vertically over slopes greater than 45 degrees.
Mobile port equipment is any motorized vehicle used to handle cargo or perform routine maintenance activities at ports. The type of equipment includes trucks, gantry cranes, container handlers, forklifts, etc.

Stacker reclaimer
A stacker-reclaimer is a combination of a stacker for stacking materials and a reclaimer for recovering bunker material such as ore or grain from a stockpile. It can stack material on stockpiles and reclaim it with a bucket wheel at the tip of the boom.
Portal or gantry cranes are a type of crane that spans an object or work area, and the entire crane can be moved around the work area.
Mobile cranes are designed to be easily transported to a job site and used with various types of loads and goods with little or no erection or assembly.
Deck crane
Deck cranes are located on bulk carriers, container ships as well as engineering vessels and provide safe and effective loading and unloading of cargo on general cargo, container, bulk and other vessels.
A reach stacker is a Mobile Machine for handling intermodal freight containers in terminals or ports. They are able to transport quickly over short distances and - depending on access - stack containers.

Straddel or van carrier
A straddle carrier or van carrier is a mobile machine for transporting goods that carries / transports its load underneath. Compared to trucks, for example, this means that loading and unloading does not require the help of cranes or forklifts.
Hoist
Container handler
A container handler is a special forklift capable of stacking empty containers and dispatching full ones with high precision.

Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), self-driving vehicles or autonomous driverless vehicles are material handling or load carrying robots that move autonomously around the port without an operator or driver on board.
