Function principle of inclination sensors

Function principle of inclination sensors

  • Tilt sensors measure the inclination angle of an object relative to the gravity of the earth without contact.
  • Thanks to the use of highly developed capacitive MEMS technology, tilt sensors are very precise and extremely robust, even in harsh environments.
  • One-dimensional sensors measure the inclination of an axis in the range of 360°. Two-dimensional sensors simultaneously measure two axes up to a maximum of ± 90°.

MEMS technology

  • Baumer tilt and acceleration sensors use sensor elements based on capacitive MEMS technology (micro-electro-mechanical system).
  • Compared to alternative technologies, capacitive MEMS sensor elements exhibit the advantage of a small size, no moving parts and high cost-efficiency, as well as the highest reliability under the harshest conditions.
  • The capacitive MEMS sensor elements used by Baumer are especially qualified for the tough application in industrial and mobile automation, while their long-term availability is assured.
Precise, motion-compensated position

Precise, motion-compensated position

  • The reliable, precise, and fast measurement of the angle position of moving machine parts in real time is the key to maximum dynamics, control, and safety.
  • The GIM700DR allows this position measurement with the highest dynamics and precision through unsurpassed signal quality, robustness, high resolution and minimum following error.
  • In application, this results in increased efficiency, lower wear, and improved ease of use compared to conventional inclination sensors.

Reliable mounting and durable function

Reliable mounting and durable function

  • For maximum reliability and optimum motion transmission, the GIM700DR is mechanically mounted with robust  M6 screws. Only a flat, sufficiently large surface is required. Further interventions in the mechanics are no longer necessary.
  • Durable and robust M12 connectors for extreme outdoor conditions ensure that signals and data are transmitted reliably and without interference even under high mechanical and chemical stress caused by temperature changes, dirt, shocks, and vibration.
  • Thanks to plug and socket connections on the sensor, the bus cabling and power supply can be looped through several bus participants.

Easy integration

  • The CiA DS 410 device profile for inclination sensors specifies the CANopen interface for single- and dual-axis devices, including the 16-bit or 32-bit inclination values for the longitudinal and transverse axes as well as the associated operating parameters, default values and offsets.
  • The Baumer inclination sensors support this device profile and are also compatible with each other.
  • This decisively simplifies the integration of the sensors into the control environment and the change from a conventional inclination sensor to a dynamic device.

Robust R-series “designed for mobile automation”

  • The Baumer R-Series rotary encoders and position sensors are designed for uncompromising ruggedness, for highest durability and availability in demanding outdoor applications, mobile automation, and off-highway applications. Your advantages:
    • Safe operation due to high protection class up to IP 67 and IP 69K
    • Highest corrosion protection CX through optimized material selection
    • Extended temperature range -40 ... +85 °C
    • High shock and vibration resistance 200 g / 20 g
    • Best electromagnetic compatibility through E1-compliant design

Outstanding corrosion protection

Configurable frequency filters

  • Vibrations and shocks on the machine part during inclination and acceleration measurements can lead to errors and falsification of measured values.
  • Digital frequency filters (low-pass, band-pass) can make a decisive contribution to eliminating the influence of interferences in a targeted manner.
  • Signal conditioning in the sensor frees the machine control from time-consuming, computationally intensive tasks.
  • The frequency filters can be configured easily and quickly, precisely for the specific application.

Outstanding, sea water resistant corrosion protection

Outstanding corrosion protection

  • Due to optimized material selection and highly resistant coatings, Baumer inclination and acceleration sensors are specially designed for use in corrosive environments.
  • This makes them ideally suited for permanent outdoor use, especially in mobile automation, off-highway applications, in coastal areas, and at sea.
  • Their corrosion protection is validated by extensive salt spray tests and complies with the highest corrosiveness category CX following the standards EN 60068-2-52 and EN ISO 12944.

Functional safety with standard components

  • Functionally safe applications can be realized under certain conditions with standard components in the sense of the Machinery Directive.
  • Thanks to ISO 13849-compliant firmware, rotary encoders and sensors are in principle suitable for use in safety functions up to PLd.
  • Our qualified and experienced experts would be glad to support you in the design of your safety-relevant application and its certification by the notified body.
